Building the Perfect Present is the tenth episode of the first season.
Summary
When Comet sees everyone else's complicated presents for Sputnik's birthday, he tries to compete. But it turns out a simple, heartfelt present is better.
Plot
Comet is holding googly eyes on his fingers. Sal asks Comet what he's making, and Comet tells him that he's making a birthday present for Sputnik. Sal says that a bookmark is a perfect present for someone who loves to read and says that Sputnik is lucky. Comet says that luck had nothing to do with it and says that it was meant to be.
Flashback
Sputnik is about to sit and read her favorite book. Suddenly, Halley flies in on rocket boots, but the boots malfunction, and she runs into Sputnik. Halley apologizes and Sputnik says that she's fine. The book is floating in the air, but Sputnik catches it. The boots continue flying like crazy, and Radar says that he told Halley the boots weren't ready yet. Radar rams into Sputnik, which sends her book flying again. Halley and Radar run into Jet, who's carrying bowls. Radar apologizes, and Jet who catches 7 bowls in his hands and 1 on his tail. Jet runs into Sputnik, which sends the book flying. Comet walks in and catches the book. Sputnik thanks him and notices that the bookmark stayed in place... but it falls out and lands on a bird, who flies out. Sputnik is depressed.
End of flashback
Comet explains that Sputnik needed a new bookmark, so he made one out of his favorite picture, which reminded him of their friendship. Sal quotes his GamGam, "The best gifts come from here." Sal points to himself. Comet says, "The stomach?" and Sal says that he thinks she meant the heart, because it shows that you care. Sal says that he's gotta finish his macrame plant holder.
Halley asks Comet if he's ready for the party. She says that she found the perfect gift for Sputnik. Comet asks she got her a bookmark, but Halley says that she got her a sparkleflora rainbow plant, and thinks it's the best present ever since Sputnik likes sparkles, rainbows and plants. She asks Comet what he got Sputnik, and Comet hides his bookmark from her and says that he was thinking about what to give her. Halley reminds Comet that Sputnik likes things that are colorful, sparkly and flowers, but tells him not to get her a colorful sparkly flower, since that's what SHE got her. As she walks out, Comet is sad.
Radar asks Comet what's wrong, and Comet tells him that his present for Sputnik isn't as special as she is. Radar likes the googly eyes, but Comet says that they're not enough. He asks Radar what he's going to do, and Radar reminds him that he's in an arts and crafts room, meaning that if he didn't like what he made the first time, he can make something else. Comet puts together a makeshift flower pot with a rainbow flower with no sparkles. Comet reads the glitter jar, which says to apply small amounts with a cotton swab. However, Comet goes overboard with the glue and the glitter. He and Radar are now covered in glue, but the pot is still sticky. It's stuck to Comet, who tries to get it off. Eventually, he screams for help and Radar tells him to hold still. He gets it unstuck... but it's stuck on Comet's back. Radar tells Comet to give Sputnik something else. Comet asks Radar what he got her, and Radar says that he got glowing balloons with Sputnik's face on them. Radar says, "But wait, there's more!" Radar presses a button, and the balloons play music and start moving. Radar says that since Sputnik likes balloons, so he figured it would be perfect. Radar says that he has to get them to the Frosty Star before she arrives and wishes Comet good luck on figuring out what to give her.
Jet walks by and Comet asks him to help him make a present for Sputnik. Jet agrees, and Comet says that he has an idea, but it's going to take a lot of work.
They make a Sputnik balloon (a balloon designed and shaped like Sputnik), and sings while holding the balloon. The balloon hits a star, causing it to pop, deflate and land on Comet. Jet shows Comet his present for Sputnik, and it's a giant duck. Comet asks Jet for advice, and Jet says that the present should be big and wide. Comet takes this advice, and decides to compromise all of his friends' ideas into a singular gift.
At the party, Sputnik thanks everyone for the gifts, and says that this is the best birthday ever, but Comet hasn't arrived. Comet shows up and tells Sputnik that he doesn't have a present for her. Sputnik says that she doesn't need one, but Comet tells Sputnik that she has to follow here because the present is so ginormous, he couldn't bring it in.
They follow him into the arts and crafts room, and Comet tells Sputnik that it's a "super rain sparkle glitter plant music b'loon." Sputnik says that the gift is definitely unique. The patch that covered the hole in the balloon starts to pop off, and before Radar suggests what they should do, the patch comes off and the balloon deflates! The balloon starts going haywire and making a mess of things, before finally settling to the ground.
Comet apologizes to Sputnik, and says that the balloon was her present, but now it's ruined and he doesn't have anything to give her. Sputnik liked when the balloon zoomed and exploded, and says that she doesn't need a present from Comet; as they have the coolest friendship ever, and that's good enough for her. Comet still wants to give Sputnik something, so he gives her his bookmark, and Sputnik says that it's perfect. Sputnik says that she reads every day, and she will use the bookmark every single day, and every day when he opens the book, she'll have the picture to smile about. She says that a smile every day is a fantastic present. Sal offers Plorpian Plum smoothies for everyone.
